National Christmas Tree Lighting Date is Thursday December 4th 2025 at 5:30pm

Overview & significance

The Lighting of the National Christmas Tree is a long-standing holiday tradition in Washington, D.C., centered around the annual illumination of the Ellipse (just south of the White House). The first formal tree lighting occurred on December 24, 1923, when Calvin Coolidge pressed the button to light a 48-foot balsam fir from Vermont, decorated with 2,500 red, white and green electric bulbs.

Over time, the ceremony has grown from a simple tree lighting to a multi-day (and multi-week) festive event with performances, ornament galleries from across the U.S., and a “Pathway of Peace” featuring trees from all 50 states and U.S. territories.
