Bentley Motors LTD was founded in 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley, known as "W.O."
Shortly after WW1, W.O. revived his motor car interests and in London set out the development of a racing engine the "Experimental Bentley #1". "I wanted to make a fast car, a good car, the best in it's class" said Bentley.
Through the 1920s the Bentley's were dominating race cars, winning races and setting numerous speed records. Yet despite it's racing record and public acclaim, Bentley Motors LTD was beset by financial difficulty. By 1931 closure was imminent. Rolls Royce stepped in to save the Bentley name and a new era began.
Bentley cars have been built by hand along side Rolls Royce cars since 1933. They both incorporate the same high standards of design and construction, but both have distinctly different heritage. The Bentley and Rolls companies have created cars which became a legend and remain prized possessions at the end of the 20th century. These cars have long been looked upon as the ultimate of cars for dedicated members of the sporting fraternity.
It is also said that one is never an owner of a Bentley, rather a temporary caretaker or custodian of a piece of artwork in motion.
In April of 1955 the new Rolls Royce Silver Cloud appeared. The Rolls chief designer had tailored the attractive body so perfectly well balanced that the car's enormous size wasn't obvious at first glance.
